EPMEPM: Ask The Expert

Ask the coach: How can I implement what I learn in training?

Our expert property management coach, Heidi Walkinshaw, answers the question on how to better implement the things you've learned in training sessions and conferences while juggling in to property management tasks.

Q. I’ve realised that most of the training I did in 2018 hasn’t really stuck and I’ve fallen back into old habits. How can I get better about implementing the things I learn in training sessions and conferences while juggling my property management workload?

It can be challenging when you are attending so many training sessions and learning, as well as juggling your everyday workload, to implement all the ideas you take away.

After attending any training and while the ideas are fresh in your mind, take some time to review the key points you would like to implement in your role or business. A tip is to write down, list and categorise them into three key areas: need to implement, would like to implement and not a priority. Alternatively, categorise them into a traffic light system: Red (important), Amber (want), Green (immaterial).

Once you have your list, it’s important to act on the items you have identified and pre-plan regular check-ins to ensure they are being implemented and carried out. We can fall into the trap of getting caught up in the day to day without planning accountability around outcomes, which is where we fall back into old habits.

Having an accountability-buddy to bounce your ideas off can help maintain the momentum of implementing those improvements and keep you on track.
