Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s $200 million Malibu marvel

Beyoncé and Jay-Z, the power couple of the music industry, have made headlines once again with their recent purchase of a stunning vacation home in Malibu.

Following Jay-Z‘s lucrative sale of his controlling stake in the D’ussé Cognac brand earlier this year, the couple has reportedly invested $200 million in a breathtaking Brutalist-style estate perched high above Paradise Cove.

According to TMZ, this record-breaking sale has set a new benchmark for California real estate, surpassing the previous record of $177 million held by a neighbouring Malibu compound.

In fact, it stands as the second-highest price ever paid for a residential property in the US, according to dirt.com.

However, it is worth noting that the Carters managed to secure the property for less than its private listing price of $295 million, making it an exceptional deal.

Situated on an expansive eight-acre blufftop plot, the estate boasts unparalleled views of the ocean and coastline, along with direct access to one of Malibu’s most picturesque beaches.

The centrepiece of the property is a magnificent 3716sq m mansion designed by renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando, in collaboration with LA-based WHY Architects.

Originally commissioned by Bill and Maria Bell, heirs to the soap opera dynasty responsible for The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful, the house took 15 years to plan and construct.

Completed around 2014, the monolithic fortress was meticulously crafted to showcase the Bells’ extensive collection of modern art, featuring works by luminaries such as Jeff Koons, Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst, and Marcel Beauchamp.

Although specific details about the property’s interior are scarce due to its exclusive listing, aerial views reveal a sprawling backyard adorned with seemingly endless stretches of manicured lawns.

Adding to the allure are two colossal outdoor pools—one for swimming and another as a reflecting pool—exemplifying Ando’s signature style.

Notably, the estate’s construction prominently incorporates concrete.

Pacific Pervious Concrete, one of the contractors involved, provided a staggering 2090sq m of polished pervious concrete for the driveway and motorcourts alone.

Additionally, Morley Concrete contributed an impressive 5849 cubic metres of concrete to erect the residence itself.

While details regarding the number of bedrooms and bathrooms remain undisclosed, it is expected that the interiors will exude a strictly minimalist aesthetic.

Fans of architectural marvels may recall that this is not Tadao Ando’s sole residential project in Malibu.

Two years ago, Kanye West acquired a smaller Ando-designed home in the vicinity for a price of $57 million.

In addition to their latest acquisition, Beyoncé and Jay-Z possess an array of other properties, including a penthouse in New York City and a house in the Hamptons.

Nevertheless, their primary residence for the time being remains an opulent $88 million mansion situated in the exclusive Bel Air neighbourhood of Los Angeles.
