Emma Clements started her working career like many Aussie teenagers do, working at McDonald’s. And it was at the golden arches the Stean Nicholls Business Development and Leasing Manager developed the strong work ethic that still serves her well today. Here, Emma shares her goals for the next 12 months and why her best piece of advice involves amphibians.
What was your first job and what did it teach you?
My first job was at McDonald’s. I started taking orders, then progressed onto McCafé and became a team leader.
McDonald’s taught me a strong work ethic and an ability to adapt to a changing environment.
My first job in the real estate industry was with LJ Hooker in Kempsey.
How many years have you been in the industry?
I started in the industry when I was 18, and I have now been working in the industry for 14 years.
Did you choose property management or did property management choose you?
I feel property management chose me.
I started as a receptionist and was approached by our principal as he thought I would suit property management more than reception.
What’s a special place in your area and what do you love about it?
I love Noreuil Park foreshore, which is a beautiful park situated on the Murray River here in Albury.
It can be enjoyed all year round if you want to sit in the sun or have a swim.
There is a lovely café at the park.
It’s such a beautiful, relaxing spot overlooking the Murray River, and there are plenty of grassy spots to enjoy hot summer days or catch the winter sun.
What’s your most memorable rental property and why?
My most memorable property would be a beautiful Hamptons-style home in South Albury.
When I listed this property, I was in the middle of organising plans to build our home, and this beautiful home gave me so many ideas on design and colours.
What key goals are you focusing on this year?
My key goals for this year would be bringing in 220 new listings, strengthening current relationships with our existing landlords and offering more than just property management services.
We want to be able to offer a service that is different from what your typical agent provides.
We want to be able to provide a comprehensive service that maximises our landlords’ assets.
I would also like to attend more training and keep learning from the best.
Where would you like to be in a year’s time?
In a year’s time, I would like to have continued my role with Stean Nicholls, and to have achieved my goal of 220 new listings.
I also want to focus on areas I can improve and do better in.
If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always gotten.
If you could change one thing about the industry, what would it be?
If I could change one thing about the property management industry, it would be the stigma that agents are all the same.
Just because you have had a bad encounter or experience with one agent doesn’t mean we are all like that.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given and who gave it to you?
Get the frog off your desk first thing in the morning.
If you have an awkward phone call to make or an email to write, get it done first thing in the morning.
If you don’t, you will spend your entire day stressing and worrying over that one call or email.
Once it is done, you will be so much more productive for the day.
