Wilson Architects’ Riverbank House has been awarded the Robin Dods Award for Residential Architecture at the Australian Institute of Architects’ Queensland Architecture Awards.
The home is one-of-a-kind and sits on the banks of the Brisbane River in Highgate Hill, four kilometres south of the Brisbane CBD.
Riverbank House is an interpretation of the classic Queenslander, a quintessentially Australian style of detached house with a corrugated iron roof and a timber façade.
The home, which was designed by Hamilton Wilson of Wilson Architects, mixes indoors and out with a layout that combines the living spaces with the surrounding riverside landscape.
Judges praised Mr Wilson’s ability to incorporate nature into the home.
“Riverbank House is orchestrated between the steep landscape of the river edge and a private courtyard for a family in a suburban setting,” jury member Dirk Yates said.
“The maintenance of remnant stairs and garden walls, along with the integration of native plantings, firmly imbed the new building into the historically layered landscape.”
Jury chairwoman Eloise Atkinson called the design “high calibre” and praised the environmental influences.
Riverbank House is now eligible for the Australian Institute of Architects National Architecture Awards, which are scheduled to take place in November 2021.
