In an exciting sneak peek, Australian actress and Hollywood star, Margot Robbie, has given fans a mesmerising tour of the iconic Barbie Dreamhouse in the film.
Robbie, who plays Barbie in the highly anticipated film, throws open the doors into the whimsical pink, plastic abode, in a video for Architectural Digest.
Opening the hot pink doors to the house of every five-year-old girl’s dreams, Robbie invites viewers into the meticulously designed home, filled with captivating features and imaginative details.
From the breakfast table in the kitchen to the elegant living room, each space exudes Barbie’s signature style and vibrant personality.
As Robbie playfully points out, the Dreamhouse boasts a fun-filled bar and an astonishing slide that seamlessly connects the bedroom to the sparkling pool.
“Not super practical, but nothing is for Barbie. It’s just fun and gorgeous,” she explains.
And the Dreamhouse, just like the other houses in the film, is see-through, allowing Barbie and her friends to see each other without leaving their houses, all of which are located on Barbie Way, of course.
“All the barbies in their own Barbie dream houses wake up in the morning, and they can wave at each other,” Robbie explains.
Reflecting on the extensive design process, Barbie writer and director Greta Gerwig reveals the attention given to selecting the perfect shades of pink.
Originally, the team started with 100 different shades of pink, before culling it down to 10.
“I can’t even tell you the meetings we’ve had about pink,” Gerwig says.
“We sat with all these different kinds of pinks. And we were like, ‘What is the pink, and how do the pinks interact?’
“When I was a little girl, I liked the pinkest, brightest things.”
The Dreamhouse features a delicate, pale pink as its base colour, evoking a sense of elegance while maintaining a playful and vibrant atmosphere.
Taking inspiration from the enchanting soundstage musicals of the 1950s, Gerwig shares, “It felt like we could ground everything in that look of 1950 soundstage musicals, Gene Kelly or vincente Minnelli, those wonderfully fake, but emotionally artificial spaces.”
Throughout the tour, Robbie expresses her admiration for the production team’s meticulous craftsmanship.
Handmade elements fill the Dreamhouse, showcasing the team’s extraordinary attention to detail.
There’s toothbrushes in the bathroom, fake food in the kitchen and outdoor furniture by the pool despite the fact there’s no water in the pool.
“There is no water in Barbie Land,” Robbie notes.
“There’s no water or fire. There are no elements.
“It’s actually funny to see how many people avoid walking… everyone walks around the pool.”
From timeless pieces that reflect Barbie’s evolution over the years to modernist furniture inspired by the late ’50s and ’60s, the Dreamhouse creates a nostalgic and captivating atmosphere.
When the Barbie movie hits Australian movie theatres in July, Gerwig says she has one wish.
“I want everyone to feel like they can reach onto the screen and touch everything… emotionally, just remembering standing in Toys ‘R’ Us looking at Barbies with the plastic sheet over it, and everything, and you wanted to take it off, and take everything apart, and touch everything,” she says.
