A community in Texas is set to become the largest group of homes constructed using 3D printing technology.
According to dezeen.com, the group of 100 homes in Georgetown, outside of Austin, is being constructed by American construction technology company ICON and co-designed by Danish architecture studio BIG.
Nicknamed Wolf Ranch, construction has started at the community, which will feature homes that come in eight different floor plans, with layouts that range from 146sq m to 196sq m.
Construction company Lennar is using ICON’s Vulcan robotic construction system to print the structural elements of the homes.
ICON co-founder Jason Ballard said the world first will change the way homes are built.
“For the first time in the history of the world, what we’re witnessing here is a fleet of robots building an entire community of homes,” Mr Ballard said.
“And not just any homes, homes that are better in every way.
“In the future, I believe robots and drones will build entire neighbourhoods, towns, and cities, and we’ll look back at Lennar’s Wolf Ranch community as the place where robotic construction at scale began.”
The homes will be double-height, with the walls and some furniture printed by the Vulcan machines.
The community is designed to mirror the traditional American suburban layout and will feature driveways, yards and streets connecting the homes.
The homes will be both three and four-bedroom and priced in the mid-$400,000 range.
