Trading places: Brad Pitt and Aileen Getty swap mansions

Hollywood star Brad Pitt has acquired a stunning midcentury modern pavilion nestled in the Los Feliz foothills, once owned by oil heiress Aileen Getty.

The $5.5 million, 185sq m home is largely made from steel and glass, and designed by mid-century architect Neil M. Johnson.

And in an episode of ‘trading places’, Pitt bought Getty’s home after she purchased his $33 million estate.

Getty also made a tidy profit on the home, known as Steel House, which she acquired from Maroon 5’s James Valentine for $4.1 million in 2019.

Built in the 1960s, Steel House underwent a full renovation when Valentine owned it and boasts cantilevered eaves, beamed ceilings and terrazzo floors.

The property also features a tropical landscape, a redwood hot tub, a freestanding sauna building and a cozy terrace with views of the city lights below.

But the retro details and colours from the 1960s abound in the property.

The combo living/dining room is warmed by a particularly groovy fireplace, while the three bedrooms feature striking cobalt blue carpeting.

The kitchen, master bath and walk-in closet also boast custom cabinetry painted in pale blue.

The L-shaped house partially wraps itself around the backyard, allowing most of the rooms to overlook the pool and patio area. The property’s thick foliage provides privacy, perfect for Pitt’s A-list lifestyle.

The acquisition of Steel House is not surprising, given Pitt’s well-known love for architecture.

He previously owned a modernist Malibu house, which was sold to Ellen DeGeneres many years ago.

Last year, he paid $40 million for the landmark D.L. James house in California’s Carmel Highlands, which has reportedly become his main residence.
