Wayde Hildrew: Trust is key

Following recent recognition on a national scale, Ray White Aspley Group’s Wayde Hildrew says it’s time more PMs and BDMs become advisers in wealth creation through property

On getting into real estate
My first job was in a mechanic shop as an apprentice, however I quickly realised I was not someone who liked to get their hands dirty, so to speak. So I then looked for a job that I could start quickly. The only one I could find was for a local real estate agency. I started there soon after and worked my way up through a number of roles.

The happiest moment in my career
The happiest moments in my career have been assisting many clients create wealth and financial freedom through the investment process. Also, when I have been recognised by peers and respected industry leaders, such as REIQ BDM of the Year 2019 and PPM National BDM of the Year for 2018.

The most memorable moment
The most memorable property I have leased is a property in Geebung which I appraised, to the owners’ surprise, at $100 more a week than any other agent. Not only did I achieve this, but I achieved it within seven days.

Best advice he’s received
The best advice I have ever received is that trust is the most important part of being a real estate agent, and that trust is created by many small actions and conversations over a large period of time.

Biggest challenge
I believe that the biggest challenge I see in the industry will be proving value with the influx of agencies that are very focused on being low-cost. We need to show why we are worth our fees. To meet this challenge we will need to be visible experts in our area, taking advantage of our community to assist in advertising our experience and providing evidence that experience beats cost.

Change for good?
The number one change I would like to see in the industry is that property managers and BDMs become advisers in wealth creation through property, understanding that we are assisting clients with what will typically be their longest and largest business transaction. We need to have a better understanding of how our role impacts our clients’ wealth creation. Perhaps this could be accomplished through compulsory training.

‘Elite’ agent means
My definition of an elite agent is an agent who always acts in their clients’ best interests, has a strong understanding of the legislative requirements of their role, and achieves exceptional results.
