Former weatherman Mike Larkan’s new career path as an auctioneer

He was the beloved television weatherman who was unexpectedly axed from Network 10 last year, after nearly 25 years in the role.

But now, Mike Larkan is forecast to thrive in his new career as an auctioneer.

Mr Larkan has been working with McGrath Sandringham for the past year, having received his real estate licence almost a decade ago.

He’s now joined independent auctioneering company EYS auctions in Melbourne, having always been interested in the field.

โ€œIn Melbourne, the two things everyone talks about is the weather and real estate,โ€ Mr Larkan told realestate.com.au.

Mr Larkan explained that auctioneering was always a career path that he had in the back of his mind.

“I’ve been a radio announcer since I was young, so I can pull together a few words and add a few numbers,” he joked.

โ€œWhat Iโ€™m hoping to do now is work a couple of twilight auctions Thursday, Friday and do some auctions at 9am, 10am, 11am on a Saturday and then do weddings over the weekend.

โ€œI do miss [presenting the weather] and I sometimes do it on social media, but Iโ€™m really excited about this next chapter.”

Mr Larkan, who also works as a wedding celebrant, revealed he’s often hired because of his history as a weatherman.

“I know when I marry couples I often get work because people say they want to be married by Mike Larkan, so I hope they might want me to sell their homes too,” he said.

The career change comes almost a year after Mr Larkan was unceremoniously let go from Network 10, just hours before his live cross.

Herald Sun reported last year the weatherman was on location at Port Phillip Bay when he received the call from Network 10’s head office in Sydney.

“I was caught off guard, I’ll be honest,” Mr Larkan said at the time.

Itโ€™s about cost cutting. Itโ€™s a business and they have to make money and I understand that. You donโ€™t want to hear the news you are no longer in their plan going forward. But Iโ€™ve taken that in my stride.”
