If you’re the type to have your Desert Island Discs list ready and waiting in case the BBC call you up to appear on their show, then you’ve probably already considered the joys of living on a secluded island.
For everyone else, Worthington Island is just a half hour boat trip from Gladstone Airport, just off the coast of the Great Barrier Reef, and can be yours for roughly $385,000.
That was the asking price accepted by a buyer a few months ago, who later pulled out of the deal. Now the island remains on the market, 69 acres including a house, a small orchard featuring 18 mango trees, and a number of machines to help with any farming you may wish to do.
Selling agents Richard and Narelle Van Hoff of Private Islands Online Australia claim it is “the cheapest island ever”, listing the benefits of buying:
- 69 acres of great farmland and or retreat
- Eight years to run on current lease with a further 25 at renewal
- Orchard with trees and fruit
- Orchids and wild flowers on island with great bird life
- Crabbing is at your door, you have to hide behind a tree to bait your hook for fish.
- Plenty of rain water 2400 litres in tanks, as well as an old well which can produce an abundance of water
- Not too far from Gladstone airport
- 240 volt to run fans and lighting, as well as a gas stove
- Victor ride-on mower and a Kubota ride-on.
- 250 Yamaha quad bike, plus pit bike
- TE20 tractor/slasher and implements
In addition, they explain that “to resurrect the orchard would help generate an income offsetting any costs” and that the house contains bee-boxes, but no bees. However, “the bees are on the island and have been seen, so it’s a matter of finding them and bringing them back home”.
