RBA appoints a new chief economist and assistant governor

Sarah Hunter has been appointed chief economist and assistant governor (Economic) at the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA).

In her new capacity, Dr Hunter will take the helm of the Bank’s economic group, encompassing economic analysis and economic research, from January 29.

“I am honoured and privileged to be joining the RBA,” she said.

“I am very much looking forward to working with the Governor, the leadership team, and the RBA’s highly skilled and expert staff to serve all Australians.”

Dr Hunter’s professional background spans academia, consulting, and public service, including high-ranking executive positions.

She played a pivotal role in establishing the Americas, Asia Pacific, and Australian offices at Oxford Economics, eventually ascending to the position of chief economist in Sydney.

Prior to that, Dr Hunter served as a Partner at KPMG in the economics and tax centre before making her mark as the head of macroeconomic conditions at the Commonwealth Treasury.

In her current role at the Treasury, she oversees the analysis of prevailing conditions and economic projections, offering counsel to the government on a wide array of economic and policy matters.

Dr Hunter’s academic credentials include a Doctor of Philosophy (Economics) from the University of Oxford.

Governor Michele Bullock said Ms Hunter was the right person for the position.

“I am delighted that Sarah will be joining us,” she said.

“She will bring a unique and diverse perspective to the Bank and the leadership team.”

Federal Treasurer Jim Chalmer agreed Dr Hunter was a “terrific appointment”.

“I’ve worked closely with Sarah, I value her judgement and insights, and I know she’ll do an exceptional job at the RBA,” he said, according to the Financial Review.

News of Dr Hunter’s appointment comes after the Bank of England’s Andrew Hauser was appointed deputy governor of the RBA at the end of November.
