Sydney’s ‘Rainbow House’ to go under the hammer

One of Sydney’s most recognisable houses, a two-storey Enmore terrace painted in rainbow stripes in support of the 2017 same-sex yes vote, will go to auction on Saturday, October 8.

The property known as the “Rainbow House”, at 73 Liberty St, features an eye-popping facade painted in pink, pale blue, green, yellow, orange and red stripes, while a mural of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury adorns the external wall along Trafalgar St.

Listing agent and Urban Lane Director Chris Akkawi said a lot of people recognised the home, which he described as symbolic of the diversity and equality of the Enmore and Newtown area.

“Newtown and Enmore are very welcoming suburbs,” he said.

“The owner wanted to make sure he supported people of all kinds and of all races.”

Inside, stylish, designer interiors are on offer including an open-plan kitchen, dining and living area on the lower level with travertine flooring, plantation shutters and quality appliances.

Upstairs awaits three bedrooms with timber floors and two designer bathrooms, including the main bathroom with floor-to-ceiling tiles and a clawfoot bath.

Mr Akkawi said with a home this vibrant, there had to be a marketing campaign to match, the centrepoint of which has been a colourful video where he and fellow listing agent Hudson Musty take buyers on a tour of the home with a play on Queen’s iconic We Are The Champions.

“We’ve had about 145 groups through the property over the four-week campaign,” he said.

“We did the big video and we’ve boosted that on all of our social platforms and then done our standard marketing and digital marketing.”

The property has approved plans for a rooftop garden valid until February 2024, with news.com.au saying the home has had price feedback in the vicinity of $1.8 million.

It is also just a short stroll to the train station, Enmore Rd shops, pubs, theatres and schools.
